Peniche is a coastal town 100 kilometres north of Lisbon and is one of the best places to go surfing in Portugal. The town has one of Portugal's largest traditional fishing ports and hence has wonderful seafood. It's also famous for its handmade bobbin lace (hence the statue in the last photo below).
Peniche has played an important role in Portuguese history and the Fort of Peniche served as a political prison during António Salazar'sEstado Novo regime, which you can read about in my blog post 25 April: a shared day in history for Australia and Portugal.
