Coimbra is Portugal’s former capital and is home to the country’s most renowned tertiary institution. The Universidade de Coimbra (University of Coimbra), which was established in Lisbon in 1290 and moved to Coimbra in 1537, is one of the oldest universities in Europe (and the world for that matter).
Coimbra lives off its academic population and has the greatest buzz in May when student celebrations take over the streets. On the other hand, expect the city to be a ghost town if you visit during the university breaks.
