Amarante is a cute town 60 kilometres east of Porto. The town sits on the banks of the Rio Tâmega, which is an offshoot of the Rio Douro and stretches all the way to Galicia in Spain. A key landmark in Amarante is the arched São Gonçalo bridge that Napoleon's troops tried to storm across in 1809 (only to be defeated). The town is famous for its sweets, including, erm, cakes that resemble male appendage, as you can see below.
