Often skipped on the tourist trail, the city of Castelo Branco is a quiet place to visit in Portugal and is tucked in the mountains around 250 kilometres north-east of Lisbon. It's close to the natural park Serra da Estrela (which is where you can go skiing in Portugal during winter).
Castelo Branco means 'white castle' in Portuguese, but the castle in Castelo Branco is not white, nor is it very big. It does offer great views of the city though. The city's parks are also beautiful and there are a number of museums.
