Nazaré is a traditional Portuguese fishing village and pilgrimage site located 130 kilometres north of Lisbon. The town holds the Guinness World Record for having the largest wave ever surfed in the world, so is a popular surf spot in Portugal that attracts surfers from around the globe.
Nazaré is one of the best holidays spots in Portugal if you're after a beach break with a side of Portuguese culture, as the town upholds strong Portuguese traditions. If you want to find out what some of these traditions are, along with tips about what to do in Nazaré, you can read this story I wrote for Australia's national newspaper, The Australian.
It's possible to do a day trip from Lisbon to Nazaré by car or bus, and if you hit the road early you can also squeeze in a trip to Óbidos on the same day (although personally I think it's worth staying at least one night in Nazaré).
