Figueira da Foz sits at the mouth of the Mondego River (the word ‘foz’ [pronounced 'fosh'] refers to a river mouth in Portuguese). The city, as well as being a fishing port, is well known for its casino (Casino Figueira) and has one of Europe’s widest beaches. It's a popular holiday destination in Portugal during summer and also has some good surf breaks.
Figueira da Foz is located 50 kilometres west of Coimbra.
